Summer is particularly busy for Gigi’s Cupcakes bakery franchises.
The season brings in customers looking for the perfect desserts to top off their sun-soaked celebrations. Summer offers myriad opportunities for Gigi’s franchisees to pursue relationships outside the store walls that help them scale their business and drive sales.
“There’s something about the changing seasons and food,” says Jack Sibley, Vice President of Franchise Development. “Once summer arrives, customers are looking for the ideal dessert for the family reunion at the lake or the July 4th picnic. Our franchisees definitely notice an increase in traffic – school’s out and more people are thinking about summer fun. Gigi’s Cupcakes, naturally, come to mind as the perfect complement to any summer event.”
Summer vacation means more time to enjoy Gigi’s Cupcakes
Summer holidays – Father’s Day and Independence Day are two family-oriented holidays that call for festive desserts. Many of our franchisees see sales spike as customers choose themed cupcakes for their holiday celebrations.
Cupcakes are especially popular for outdoor events — such as a July 4th picnic, a day at the lake or cheering on your favorite team — as they can be easily customized, are portable and self-contained. What better way to celebrate than with a cute tie topper for Dad’s cupcake; a patriotic, starred-and-striped box of mini cupcakes for the Fourth; or bats, balls and gloves adorning the winning team’s treats?
The possibilities are truly endless for customers, and our most successful franchisees approach the summer with creativity in anticipation of dessert demand that reflects the calendar.
Kids’ classes – Some of our franchise owners take the opportunity to reach out to children during the summer by offering cupcake decorating workshops. School’s out, and kids are looking for things to do. Spending time at Gigi’s is a delicious answer! For a nominal fee, kids get to learn a new skill; Mom and Dad get a break; and Gigi’s franchise owners are able to bring in extra revenue while making new contacts in the community.
“The cupcake decorating classes are a good income generator and also very memorable for the participants,” says Emily Goertemoeller, Gigi’s Cupcakes franchise owner in Lafayette, Indiana. “I have people coming in each week saying they participated in a class here a year or more ago and their face lights up with how fun it was! To us, it’s pretty ‘cupcakes-as-usual,’ but they see it through the eager and excited eyes of a cupcake-lover-and-decorating newbie!”
Opportunity outside the store – The summer is also the perfect time for franchise owners to work on growing their business. Longer days and more relaxed schedules mean charity fundraisers, weddings and receptions, and corporate events. Our most successful franchisees have grown their businesses by taking their products to their customers — not waiting on customers to come to them.
“Gigi’s is a relatively inexpensive franchise that has great unit economics,” Jack says. “We are able to produce and sell a lot of product without a lot of square footage. Additionally, we sell a lot of our product outside of what we call the ‘four walls,’ meaning the actual store itself. Many of our locations have delivery options and are able to sell at community and corporate functions. Particularly during the summer months, there is a tremendous amount of opportunity to sell both inside and outside of the store.”
